Final Project Idea

1. For this final project I intend to do another illustration in photoshop like my flamingo one. I want to illustrate a story following a young girl that talks about how women are bombarded with imagery and ideas on how they should live their life and what their role is. I want to explore how these ideas affect women at a young age and dictate how they act and feel about themselves.

2. I want to create an illustrated piece that is a fantasy piece showing how friends and family support an individual. I want to show a person being lifted by their loved ones through images of balloons, clouds, and other things. I'm leaning towards this idea more because I feel like I can do more interesting things with it.

  1. I like the almost feminist approach to idea 1. However I agree with you that you can take idea 2 much farther because it is a lot more personal to you. So how are you going to illustrate yourself? I'm interested to see how this turns out!

  2. I like the fantasy elements that you could bring in with your second project idea. Your first idea is good ... but you're right. The images will probably have to convey more realism and sharpness and may not have as interesting an effect.

  3. I love how you add your own illustrations into your pieces, so I think that is a great place to start. Your concept is also very strong and very prominent in today's society because I think every girl struggles with that. Like Lizzie I think using the more personal approach will help to push this piece further.

  4. Gender constructs are sadly commonplace and any attempt to deconstruct them are valiant in my book. The pressure placed on both females and males to behave a certain way is constricting. If you're able to convey the inherent struggle and the intended outcome you'll have a very effective final piece.

  5. I definitely think that the second idea would be less of a struggle to convey successfully. I like both, but "how these ideas affect women at a young age and dictate how they act and feel about themselves" is such a complex issue you run the risk of not getting the point across.

  6. Man, it's hard to say. This is a difficult choice. I, as well as many I'm sure, have strong feelings about gender roles/expectations/issues. However, it is true that it could be a much more difficult message to convey successfully. That doesn't mean it's impossible though. I say, if you feel strong enough about it and really have some visual ideas for getting this message across, go for it because it's a powerful statement that will never stop having relevance. -- On the other hand, I almost feel like the style you've been working in might work better for the second idea because it seems like it could be light and playful, similar to your ideas of balloons and clouds. Your style of illustration and imagery for that concept could compliment each other really well.
